Roundtables commence at 18.00 with pre-dinner drinks, with the conversation taking place over a delicious 3 course meal (with wine), in the inspirational surroundings of the Royal Society. The evening concludes at 21.00.

Expressions of interest are now invited for all 3 Roundtables. To ensure representation from across our membership, names will be selected from the Expressions of Interest list and invitations issued nearer the time.

The Executive Roundtables – in more detail

Collaboration, Tuesday 19 November 2019
Universities have always been powerful vehicles for collaboration and in the evolving world order this role is becoming even more critical and evident. As we see the status quo challenged, UK research collaboration with the rest of the World faces erosion and traditional mechanisms are under threat or diminished. If the UK continues to aspire to be a world-leader in research, and maintain and grow the value that this presents in ‘soft-power’, then we must critically reflect upon the best routes to achieve this.

This event will draw on existing evidence showing that collaborative research is more highly cited and valued in an increasingly connected world. It will provide an opportunity to explore the value and nature of existing collaborations and who our stakeholders are and should be. In the backdrop of REF, we will unpick what happens to the quality of research in universities if we only publish with other HEIs. What role is there for industrial (public, private and third sector) collaboration, now and in the future, given that the best field weighted citation indices are found when PIs are collaborating outside of the sector and their peers. Does impact give you excellence, how can this be balanced against ‘blue-skies’ research? How do we ensure that working with industry balances the needs of all stakeholders?

Gender/EDI, Thursday 20 February 2020
Promoting and supporting equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace and wider landscape is critical to minimising inequalities. Is EDI a topic for periodic discussion at a research committee, or dealt with by a distant area of your university? We all can recognise the importance of this agenda, but are you aware of the growing significance that is, and will be, attached to it? Is it at the centre of your policy development and support agenda where it should be?

This event will provide an opportunity to hear how EDI is recognised and accounted for in our working practice across the sector. We will explore Gender 2.0, women in leadership and networks, the role of women in spin-outs and challenge the impact of women being less internationally mobile with fewer international collaborations. The event will provide an opportunity to debate and further reflect on what this means for Productivity and REF, KEF and TEF.
